18/02/2003 Bernie Davis gave the Trotter Paterson Lecture
Bernie Davis (pictured right) is one of Britain’s premier
television lighting directors. His prolific output includes the
lighting of The Royal Variety Show, The Last Night of the Proms;
the 2002 Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, religious broadcasts,
Songs of Praise, the Royal Wedding at Windsor and the traditional
Festival of Carols at Kings' College Cambridge.
His outside broadcast expertise has stemmed from his early background
in vision mixing and the contrast balances of his lighting is apparent
in every production. He has a keen interest in theatre and the enhancement
techniques needed when television enters a live performance, designed
hitherto for only a real live audience.
He gave the lecture, to a packed audience, at the Institute of
Structural Engineers in Belgravia. He spoke about his early years
in vision control and what are the important points of television
lighting. He then demonstrated many examples of productions explaining
the techniques involved.
The evening was introduced and organised by Lighting Designer Peter
Phillipson
The 1st Trotter Paterson lecture was given in 1951.
This lecture formed part of the Society of Light and Lighting Lecture
series for 02/03.
